The broad span enforcement of third party motor insurance is beginning to take shape and the wings to help it fly in each state and ultimately across the length and breath of the country is being fitted. Stakeholders who have first line charge to take the enforcement of this compulsory insurance beyond the former low level of compliance prior to this new engagement have stepped up the rules of engagement. The actors are the Lagos State Police Command and the Nigerian Insurers Association NIA.
The NIA and the Lagos State Police Command have come together to form a joint task to make compliance in Lagos at top level with full value and benefits for all holders of the compulsory motor insurance. This convergence took place Tuesday, 15th April 2025, when the NIA team led by the Director General, Mrs. Bola Odukale paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh.
To get a high compliance score the NIA is offering to train Divisional Traffic Officers to upgrade their knowledge on insurance, particularly third-party motor insurance
NIA DG congratulated Jimoh on his appointment and commended the police for their role in improving compliance since enforcement began on February 1, 2025. She also appreciated the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for championing the enforcement, adding that the collaboration has significantly improved compliance across the country.
In his response, CP Jimoh commended the role insurance plays in protected motoring assuring that the police would continue to enforce the policy, as directed by the Inspector General of Police.
The Commissioner noted that the IGP took the enforcement of the policy seriously and had mandated police commands in all states across the country to send reports of developments on the enforcement to the central on a daily basis.
He also highlighted the need for insurance education, particularly in tackling fake insurance certificates.
