A National Mass Metering Programme will soon roll out across the country and this is a fallout from parley between the labour unions, Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress and the Federal government team in Abuja.
The parley which was held at the Presidential Villa Banquet Hall, had the Secretary to the federal government, Boss Mustapha, leading FG team and it was agreed that one million meters would be distributed at first instance to bridge the metering gap.
It was also agreed that the distribution would commence this week in furtherance of the acceleration of national metering programme.
The programme is expected to distribute a total of 6 million meters free of charge based on the funding by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The cost of the meters will be recovered from the electricity distribution companies. The meeting also agreed that the meters should be procured through local meter manufacturers and assemblers.
The Labour minister who read the communique said, “The two-week extension for electricity tariffs which expired this week will be extended by another one week.”
The parties agreed to reduce the tariffs by 10 percent for band A, 10.5 percent for band B and 31 percent for band C.
