The hefty pension benefits approved for former Lagos State governors and their deputies by law in 2007, will no longer be available to them. Lagos government has already set in motion the stoppage process.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, made this public while presenting the 2021 budget of Lagos State to the House of Assembly. He said he will shortly be sending a bill to repeal the Public Office Holder Payment of Pension Law 2007, because of the heavy financial burden on the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu declares, “Mr. Speaker and honourable members of the House, in light of keeping the costs of governance low and to signal selfishness in public service, we will be sending a draft executive bill to the House imminently for the repeal of the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former governors and their deputies.”
It is expected that several states where pension benefits to former governors and deputies have generated heated debates and calls for the repeal of the act backing it might follow after Lagos example.
