The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers and the Nigerian Institute of Architects, have rested the blame for building collapse on relevant government agencies lapse enforcement of multiple rules in the building industry which now is a cocktail of mandatory building under construction insurance and several recommendations of panels of enquiries.

The NCRIB president, Mr. Rotimi Edu took to the stand as a guest lecturer at the February Business Meeting of the NIA where he lectured on “Insurance for Architect and Professionals” and in bare language, urged building professionals, developers and others in the building chain to pay more attention to specifications for construction to avoid reoccurring building collapse during and after construction and the accompanying loss of lives with no insurance for building and lives.

Edu who said many buildings across the country were not fit and proper for human habitation because building rules were relaxed could have been avoided, he therefore, charged members of the NIA to embrace relevant insurances to cover their professional indemnity as well as for others that are involved in the projects they handle knowing that negligent by any in their responsibilities breeds consequences for all.

L-R: Gen Sec. NIA Lagos chapter, Arc Moniba Odunlami, chairman Arc David Majekodunmi, President NCRIB Mr. Rotimi Edu and vice chairman Arc Abiodun Fajuyi.

The chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Arc David Majekodunmi, fingered lapsed control and oversight by government institutions as a key factor in building collapse, pointing out that government has not been implementing several recommendations of panels of enquiries to curb the reoccurrence of building collapse.

Majekodunmi cleared that most times the collapses were negligence by professionals, clients and workers who are rarely sanctioned to deter its reoccurring, and also tagged panel recommendations where they exist were overlooked.
