The Executive Council of the Nigerian Actuarial Society (NAS) has started the match to get National Assembly endorsement and already building an assembly line of backers with a courtesy visit to the Director General of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) Mrs. Bola Odukale, on Thursday,13th February 2025.
The NIA would as part of their input, assess, make suggestions and contributions before presenting it to the National Assembly. The NIA DG, Mrs. Odukale, picking up immediately pledged goodwill and influence of members to provide the necessary backing required at the National Assembly when the bill gets there. She also said its long-standing partnership with NAS has aided to recognise its significance and support for enhancing members operations.
Odukale thanked Actuaries for providing clarity over some expectations from our regulator and, also mentioned its “involvement within the Nigeria Mortality Development table which has helped ensure progress in that regard. Hence, your partnership is invaluable to us.”
According to the Director General, the issue of capacity building for actuaries and dearth of actuaries within the insurance industry has become critical and both the insurance operators and the regulator were jointly seeking lasting solution.
“Actuary is a sort after profession and a prestigious career with lots of prospects and value, so there is a need to do more to develop the interest of younger professionals. Besides, she said the NIA will continue to encourage its member companies to support candidates for the Actuarial examination, which is usually expensive.
In his address, the President of NAS, Mr Jolaolu Fakoya, who is poised to be in the hall of fame of bodies that were established by the ‘Act of Parliament,’ appreciated NIA massive support extended to the Actuaries and the free accommodation for NAS Secretariat at the Insurers House.
Fakoya also lauded the NIA DG for recognising the role, importance, and contributions of Actuaries, noting that as the insurance industry grows, Actuaries must also grow and improve their visibility.
Similarly, NAS Managing Director, Ms. Yeside Gbenro also thanked NIA for the unbroken support and called for more collaborations to train professional actuaries and develop the skills of actuaries. Other NAS Council members present at the visit were, Mr Adebowale Adesona and Mr Ganiyu Shefiu.
